I’m going to run 500 miles (or maybe even 1000 km) in 2025

Stats are computed based on 1000 km per year. Dates/times are New York time (ET). The stats might take a few seconds to load, thanks to AWS Lambda and Google Sheets API slowness.

Rules

  1. If I get sick or am unable to run (e.g. travel) for a long time, I’ll prorate 500 miles/year.
  2. Running is speed exceeding 4.5 mph, ancillary walking doesn’t count.
  3. If I end up changing my pace dramatically, I retain the right to switch to 5000 min (equiv. at current 6 mph).
  4. I’m relieved of the obligation in case of force majeure or if it becomes seriously impractical, or similar.
  5. Even though the current working goal is 1000 km (622 mi), the original goal is the real goal :P.

Updates

January is done

I ended up doing 43.8 miles in January, which is 1.3 miles more than the goal of 42.5 miles! I’ve also discovered that if I don’t rest for 2 days between runs, I run out of juice very quick and that just leads to frustration. So now I’m aiming for around 5 mile runs every 3 days. That’s it for now.

March 10: goal update

I managed to run a lot in February, 59.4 mi in fact. I was really trying to push for 60 mi but the last run I started hurting so I thought I better stop.

I’ve gotten into a pretty good groove now and the 500 mi is starting to look pretty straightforward. I’m internally shooting for 1000 km now, so I’ve updated the stats to match. But the real goal is still 500 mi! Don’t hold me to 1000 km!

I also started March off with a 10 mi run; something I never thought I would do in my life.

End of May: updates

I’ve kept the running up, but was sick for a while, so I eventually prorated out those days. The current plan is to hit minimum 500 mi/year, and aim for a prorated 1000 km.

November update

I’m sorry for not doing regular updates here for those loyal followers that have been refreshing this page on the regular. As you may have observed, I’ve nonetheless kept running like I mean it, which brings me immense satisfaction.

It turns out that there were many more periods when I was unable to run than I was hoping for, so I ended up pro-rating out a whole bunch of time. Stuff like hurting my elbow because of those devilish citibikes, etc. That means that the 1000 km/year goal is a bit fantastical at the moment and the stats are a bit silly with so much removed from the goal.

Anyway, at the moment it looks like we’re on track to hit (and even healthily exceed) the original 500 mi goal.

FAQ

Why are you telling me about this?

So I can put up stats and show my family and friends. And maybe this creates more accountability.

Why are you doing miles instead of kilometers?!

I live in the US, the treadmills that I’m running on (for now) display speed and distance in miles.
